Abstract:
It is an imperative for IBCLCs to know how to assess babies who struggle with the ability to coordinate the suck swallow breathe sequence so that appropriate care plans can be made. Doing so in a timely manner is important to minimize problems such as aspiration or airway issues, poor milk transfer, impact to the maternal milk supply, and inadequate weight gain and/or delayed growth and development. This lecture will help IBCLCs to identify causative factors and characteristics of dysfunctional sucking patterns and then provide examples of care plans that help realize optimal outcomes and improved feeding.
