Abstract:

Our understanding of the over production of breastmilk continues to grow, including its complexity, underlying mechanisms, and wide-ranging impacts on both parent and infant. This session provides an updated look at the pathophysiology, contributing factors and clinical management of hyperlactation. Topics will include the types, causes and pathophysiology of hyperlactation, the process of taking a detailed history and doing a thorough exam and care plan development. Learn more about the complications of hyperlactation, going beyond just mastitis and also looking at milk composition, research on the impact of pumping on milk supply and breast health.
Participants will also learn about when to refer and suggested medical workup and management of hyperlactation that doesn’t respond to supportive measures.
