Abstract:

IBCLCs and other healthcare providers know that best practices use a parent-centered model: crafting a care plan individualized to the family’s needs. The plan may involve medically-indicated use of formula; there may be supplementation that involves the use of a bottle-and-teat. Can a health worker even offer this teaching, while respecting the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, and professional practice-guiding documents? What if her colleagues (loudly) accuse her of not following the International Code requirements? When does “teaching” cross the line, and become “marketing” of products that fall within the scope of the International Code? Who said this teaching has to be done one-on-one ... and what happens if it occurs on-line? This session is an analysis of the ethical and legal framework when healthcare providers offer suggestions to breastfeeding or bottle-using families about the use of bottles, teats and infant formula.
